Women's Basketball moves to 10-1 in WHAC play with win over Blue Devils

(Southfield, MI) - The Rochester Christian women's basketball team cruised to its seventh-straight WHAC win of the season, to stay atop the conference standings, on Wednesday evening as they took on the Blue Devils from Lawrence Tech. The Warriors outscored LTU in the first three periods by six, twelve, and ten points, respectively. 

 

RCU moves to 10-6 overall on the season and 10-1 in conference play. 

 

FIRST HALF

Lawrence Tech began the game jumping out to an 11-4 lead with Samone Andrews and Kendal Zeiter earning RCU points. The second half of the first would belong to the Warriors though as they moved out to a 19-14 lead at the end of the quarter. Zeiter recorded an "and-1", with Jacey Somers also get into the scoring column in the period.

 

Emily Lockey, Amal Younes, and Kendal Zeiter started the second quarter out aiding the team to score the first seven points. Zeiter would continue her dominance in the paint adding another old-fashioned three-point play only a few minutes later. Ashley Loon and Jacey Somers continued to aid the Warriors scoring as RCU pushed its lead out to double-digits. 

 

SECOND HALF

Samone Andrews grabbed the first points of a 17-2 run to open up the second half as the Warriors pushed its lead out to 33 points. Shahid Bakkar, Jacey Somers and Kendal Zeiter all grabbed points in the RCU run. Karmyn Lowry and Mylah Aalse would both score to close out the third period. 

 

The final 10 minutes started with a Samone Andrews layup, Ashley Loon scored a three-pointer and Kendal Zeiter added a layup. The Blue Devils would go on a 2-4 run to bring the lead down to 16 points, but the run would be too little, too late as Jordan Peterson and Lucy Freytag would both hit layups in the final minutes. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Four of the five RCU starters scored in double-figures as Kendal Zeiter led the group with 25 points, with Samone Andrews, Jacey Somers, and Ashley Loon scoring 13, 12, and 10 points respectively. Amal Younes led the team with seven assists, with Andrews having four and Shahd Bakkar having three. 

 

Samone Andrews would lead the team with four rebounds, while Shahd Bakkar and Emily Lockey each brought down three rebounds. Amal Younes led the way with five steals, while Kendal Zeiter had three steals and two blocks.

The Warriors will head south to Lima, Ohio, as they will take on the Racers from Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, January 17, at 1 PM.
